What is Montessori?
Dr. Maria Montessori was an Italian physician and educator who created an educational approach that is child-centered and based on scientific observations of children. Her method has been successfully applied for more than 100 years in diverse cultures throughout the world. Dr. Montessori emphasized that children learn best if given freedom to discover, explore, and create in an enriched and environment under the guidance and encouragement of a trained teacher.
Montessori designed specific learning materials for the classroom environment that invite activity. These materials are not only beautiful but have been carefully designed to be: self-correcting, isolate one concept and interrelate and build upon each other. However, she also believed that her method should be open-ended and that the teacher should feel encouraged to innovate based on the observation of each child.
Montessori helps develop creativity, problem solving, and critical thinking through a self directed sensorial approach to learning. Please visit the following links to learn more about the Montessori method.
